Plan now to attend the Texas Hospital Association's Annual Leadership Conference, October 15-17, 2007 at the Renaissance Hotel inAustin. These three days are packed with networking opportunities, educational sessions, a vendor showcase, and social events. Join your fellow Texas health care leaders and future leaders in taking advantage of this great opportunity.
A keynote address by political expert Paul Begala, presentations from key Texas government officials, and lively idea exchanges are just a few of the highlights of this year's conference. Pick up valuable, useful information at sessions on best practices, physician recruitment, and purchasing, and a series on ethics and other end-of-life care issues. Paul Moore, chair of the National Rural Health Association, will kick-off a series especially for small and rural hospitals, which includes sessions on reimbursement, legislative and regulatory updates, and the annual Rural/Small breakfast, featuring Texas Country Reporter Bob Phillips.
Special events during the conference include ACHE and TONE board meetings, breakfasts and social happenings. The THA Community Service Award, Collier Award, HOSPAC Award, Pioneer Award and other special recognitions will be presented at the awards luncheon on Tuesday, followed by another keynote address and a book signing. Finally, you won't want to miss what we think is one of the most fun events every year, the Casino Party sponsored by HealthShare/THA endorsed companies, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Monday, October 15. Visit thaonline.org for conference registration and information, or call Arlena Buck at 800/252-9403 ext 1055.

Visa Backlog Cleared
Backlogs in granting employment-based visas have been cleared, making it possible for hospitals to once again hire foreign nurses to fill vacancies. According to the MHA Group, the US State Department indicated that employment-based visa numbers are current as of July, 2007. Each month, the department indicates how far these visa petitions are backlogged, and depending on occupation and country of origin of the foreign worker, it can be years. The unexpected announcement is good news for hospitals, but immigration experts urge quick action, as backlogs will likely develop again soon.
